How to Unclog a Sink

Every so often, you may encounter a clogged drain in your sink. While our Los Angeles plumber at Monkey Wrench Plumbing can resolve the issue for you, there are a few simple and effective ways to fix it on your own. With the proper items and a little elbow grease, you can get your sink back in working order.

Plunge the Drain

You will need the following item:

  • 1 plunger

The easiest way to dislodge a clog in your drain is to use a plunger. However, do not use the one you keep next to your toilet in order to avoid unsanitary substances from contacting your sink.

First, fill your sink around halfway with hot water. If you have a double sink, plug it or cover it with a rag to maintain pressure directly on the clog.

Then, place you plunger over the problematic drain. From five to ten seconds, work the plunger at a relatively aggressive pace.

Once you’ve finished, pull the plunger away and see if the water begins to drain. If it doesn’t work the first time, try a few more times before attempting the next method.

Baking Soda & Vinegar

You will need the following items:

  • 4 cups
  • 1 pair of rubber gloves
  • 1 cup of baking soda
  • 1 cup of vinegar
  • 1 bucket or container
  • 1 sink stopper
  • 1 spatula

Put on the gloves to protect your hands. Use one of your four cups to empty your sink of any remaining water, then pouring it into your bucket or container.

Once your sink is empty, pour your cup of baking soda down the drain. Then, use a spatula or similar object to push any excess baking soda further down.

Next, pour your cup of vinegar down the drain and plug up the hole with a sink stopper, forcing the bubbly reaction to happen around the clogged section of your drain. Wait for about five minutes, then pull off the sink stopper and run some hot water down the drain to see if the clog is still evident.

If you sink remains clogged, take four cups of boiling water and carefully pour them down the drain. If the problem continues, try these steps a second time.

If the second time doesn’t do the job, then it is time to contact Monkey Wrench Plumbing and schedule a professional service.
